Last week, while reflecting with my son Judah on Hebrews 11—often called the Hall of Faith—we found ourselves immersed in the stories of men and women who trusted God against all odds. As we read the names—Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and others—I was struck by their diversity. Some were shepherds, some kings, some wanderers, yet all were united by one thing: unwavering faith in God.
Suddenly, Judah turned to me and asked, “Mamma, do you think if the Bible was written in our times, you and I would be mentioned as heroes of faith?”
His question caught me off guard, but it lingered deep in my heart. After a pause, I replied, “I hope and pray with all my heart that we live in such a way—that we, too, can be examples of heroes of faith.”
The more I pondered his question, the more I realized that the legacy of faith is not confined to ancient times or to the pages of Scripture. Hebrews 12:1 reminds us:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
That “cloud of witnesses” is not just Abraham, Moses, or Esther—it’s also those who have walked faithfully in more recent history.
I think of George Müller, who trusted God radically to provide for thousands of orphans through prayer alone (Philippians 4:19). I think of Corrie ten Boom, who risked her life to hide Jews during the Holocaust and later forgave her enemies, embodying Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:44. I think of my own father, V. M. Samuel, an ordinary man who dared to believe God for extraordinary exploits, leading thousands to Jesus. I think of Sally Clarkson and other mentors in the homeschooling community, who have modeled perseverance and poured their lives out for God’s glory.
These modern heroes of faith remind me that God is still writing His story through ordinary people who trust Him. Hebrews 11:6 tells us:
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”
Our daily choices—to believe when doubt shouts louder, to obey when it’s inconvenient, to love when it costs us—are the bricks that build a legacy of faith.
So here’s my prayer: may we live so faithfully that, if the story were told today, our names would be counted among those who walked by faith. Because faith is not a relic of the past—it is for every generation. And God still delights in using ordinary people, yes you and me, to accomplish extraordinary things for His glory.
