Why did God do this to me? It’s so unfair, I have always been good but how can this happen to me

The first point is that we all need to know a key fact that God does not do all these things. He is not responsible for it. If only God causes all these unfair situations in our lives that how can we ever call him a “Good God”. Each of us would only have nothing but complaints about God. In most cases, what happens to us is only because of consequences of our own actions. If we are suffering from ill health, ask yourself if you have done enough to take care of your body? Eating healthy and natural food that has all the necessary minerals and vitamins is so essential for our bodies to stay healthy. If we meet with an accident, would it not be our own mistake of the mistake of the other person? There are occasions where miraculously God saved a person from dying but who is equal to God to question what He does and why does He do it.

To summarize again, there are mainly four possibilities for the reasons behind our unfair situations:

  1. It could be because of people around us.
  2. It could be an attack of the enemy as Satan is always working against us.
  3. It could just be part of living in a fallen world that is ruled by the enemy.
  4. Or it could be our own mistakes or decisions that we take.

Every time, we go through problems, challenges, or unfair situations, we have to discern subjectively as to what is the cause of our suffering and respond to it accordingly seeking the Holy Spirit to help you. One important point to remember, please don’t look at people or person but always look beyond them to discern where the really issue is.

Taking an example of natural disasters, it is not caused by God, but it is a consequence of us exploiting the earth and its natural resources. Surely, God uses it to remind ourselves that we cannot play God. Nothing on this earth is certain so living life every day and staying firm on our faith upon God is the best attitude to have

Life is so unfair and more so, it is even more painful for good people who are right with God and people (please refer to our answer to question – Why does the righteous seem to suffer more than the wicked?) but what we need to focus our energies on is on our attitude. Looking at Job, Joseph’s and Paul’s examples in the bible, how did they react when they were thrown into such unfair situations. It was so easy for them to move away from God and curse Him but they knew that God is good. He is always able and willing to lift His children out of the valley. It is extremely important that we draw close to God during these trouble times so we stay grounded on His word. There is a saying “No season is permanent, whether a good one or bad” so such difficult situations are never permanent in our lives but if we draw closer to God and allow Him to break us, mold us and build us up during this time, we will only come out of it victoriously looking more radiant and ready to fulfil His calling. There are also situations where God brings in our lives to wake us up or to catch our attention. Just like how we discipline our children, God is keen to discipline us, so we don’t miss the bus that takes us to heaven.

Our question should not be “Why God did this to me?” But we need to ask ourselves, how should we respond in this situation, how should we react and what should our attitude be? Draw closer and allow God to speak to you. Discern what you can learn from the situation always remember Romans 12:12 – “Be joyful in hope, be patient in affliction and be diligent in your prayer”

Jesus said in John 16:33  – “In this world, there will be tribulation but take heart, I have overcome the world”. This is a warning for us that there will be tribulation, but we don’t have to be discouraged about it. We need to take heart knowing that Jesus has overcome the world.
