Do we take Communion as a religious activity? Or do we truly believe in the reality of what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did for us?
In the Bible, Paul keeps repeating that the blood of Jesus brings forgiveness. Imagine this, Jesus’ perfect body and blemish-free, sinless life crucified; taking the weight of our sins, sickness, burdens, and battles, so that we can have freedom and live an abundant wholesome life.
Here are some verses that I want you to hold close to your heart as we embark on this journey of learning the power of Communion.
Colossians 1:14
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Ephesians 1:7
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
Luke 22:19, 20
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
The Holy Communion is one of the greatest expressions of God’s love for His people. As you might already know, two components of Communion are the bread that represents Jesus’ body and the wine, which is His blood that was shed on the cross. Week after week, we hear the famous passage from 1 Corinthians 11: 23-26
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Familiar?
Our senior pastor has been reminding us as a congregation about the importance of communion, for almost the whole of last year. He always encourages us to take communion regularly; even daily! That’s right–take time every day to remember what Jesus did for us and how it saved us from sin from hell from the clutches of the devil. Never take what Jesus did on the cross lightly. It is not a weekly ritual but an act of worship!
Our children, Judah and Sairah, accepted the Lord, in mid-2022, and ever since then, they have been part of our family communion that we do at home. In November, my husband, Joel, was on a business trip in the US, and we stayed back in Singapore. During that time, Sairah fell really ill; so much so that she was not able to keep food in her body. She was constantly throwing up and getting dehydrated.
My head was buzzing with questions–“What do I do?” “Should I take her to the hospital?” “Is it food poisoning?” Seeing that she was sick for the whole afternoon, I was mentally prepared for a sleepless night. “How am I going to do it?” –Human worry! At that moment the Holy Spirit reminded me about the power of communion. I got the elements together immediately, and I asked Sairah, “Do you believe that you are healed because of what Jesus did on the cross?” And she said, “Yes!”. And we prayed together. We spoke over her body and she took communion. After that, she went to bed and slept through the night normally. When she woke up, she was much better; she did not throw up the light breakfast she had that morning. Amazing is the way the Lord works!
“Never take what Jesus did on the cross lightly. It is not a weekly ritual but an act of worship!”
Remember this!
In excitement, I called Joel and narrated the whole story–I was super amazed by what the Lord did for my baby girl. That Sunday, I testified about the power of Communion in our church, and one of the church members, who was ailing said, “I am going to start taking Communion the following week before I go to the doctor!” And guess what, her health was restored! Surely, it is supernatural, isn’t it?–the kind of healing that only Jesus can do!
We experienced healing again the last weekend as well, and I am so sure of the power of Communion that I don’t fret at the first sight of sickness or struggle. The Lord has been so faithful to us and constantly revealing to us the power of communion. I urge you to remind yourself and your family of the power of the sacrifice on the cross, and not panic when life throws sickness, struggles, or bondage. The body and blood of Christ have the power to break every chain, free you from every bondage, heal sickness, and redeem you from the gravest of sins. Come to His table with thanksgiving, remembering what Jesus did on the cross for you and me. Believe that the power is available for us today– believe that you will see a breakthrough in your life.
His Word says, “It is finished!” Period. Don’t punctuate it with a question mark. “It is finished!” –believe that it is.
Consider this:
Here are three B’s to takeaway as you delve deep into learning more about the Holy Communion: Break– Know that Communion has the power to break every bondage. Nothing is too difficult or too dark and dingy for the Lord. He knows, He sees and He hears. More than anything, He understands. Burn– Make sure your soil is ready to be sowed. In agriculture, there is a method called slash and burn which is done after every harvest. This is to burn remnants of the previous harvest from the roots; the soil also gets fertilized in the process with the ash. Prepare yourself, burn all preconceived notions, and till your soil for the sowing by the Holy Spirit. Breathe–Finally, don’t cloud your head with a lot of teaching or doctrines, instead, dive into the Word of God. Breathe in the Word the God, and exhale your doubts. |
Indeed, Amazing is the power of the Communion.
