It’s fascinating to think that every event in human history connects to that miraculous moment when the Lord became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). The birth of Jesus Christ shaped not just our calendar, dividing time into BC and AD, but also our lives in extraordinary ways. His entry into our world continues to transform hearts and bring hope—do you agree?
As we reflect on the Christmas story, let’s examine the first three individuals who encountered its message. Despite the messiness of their situations, they responded with faith and hope. Their examples remind us that no matter how chaotic life may seem, God’s promises shine through.
Mary: Trusting in God’s Perspective
Mary’s life was turned upside down when the angel Gabriel appeared to her, announcing she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38). Imagine her confusion and fear as a young, betrothed woman in a culture where an unwed pregnancy could bring shame or even death. Yet, Mary responded with faith: “I am the Lord’s servant,” she said. “May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).
In life’s messy moments, when everything feels uncertain or overwhelming, Mary’s example teaches us to seek God’s perspective. We can pray, “Lord, help me see this through Your eyes and trust Your plans over my own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. For instance, someone facing a sudden job loss might turn to prayer and Scripture, seeking guidance and trusting that God has a better plan, even when the future feels uncertain.
Joseph: Responding with Obedience and Kindness
Joseph, Mary’s betrothed, faced a crushing revelation when he discovered her pregnancy. His initial plan was to divorce her quietly, showing compassion even in disappointment. But God had a greater plan. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, instructing him to take Mary as his wife and raise the child as his own (Matthew 1:18-23). Despite the stigma and uncertainty, Joseph obeyed.
Joseph’s response challenges us to act with kindness and obedience, even when life doesn’t make sense. For example, imagine forgiving a friend who has betrayed your trust and choosing to help them during their time of need. Such acts of kindness reflect obedience to God’s command to love others, even when it feels difficult. When people hurt us or circumstances test our faith, we can choose to trust God’s bigger picture. As Romans 8:28 assures, “In all things, God works for the good of those who love Him.”
Elizabeth: Blessing Others in the Mess
Elizabeth, Mary’s relative, experienced her own miraculous but untimely pregnancy. She was elderly, likely dealing with physical challenges and hormonal changes. Yet, when Mary visited her, Elizabeth didn’t focus on her own struggles. Instead, filled with the Holy Spirit, she blessed Mary with words of encouragement and joy (Luke 1:41-45).
Elizabeth’s story reminds us that even in our messy situations, we can bless others when we are filled with the Spirit. For example, we can offer a kind word or encouragement to someone struggling, volunteer to help a neighbor in need, or pray for others even while navigating our own challenges. These small acts of blessing can shine God’s light in dark times. Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit, including love, joy, and kindness. When we lean into God’s presence, He enables us to share His hope and grace with those around us.
The story of Jesus’ birth doesn’t begin in the New Testament; it was foretold centuries earlier. The prophet Isaiah declared, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Yet, it took 700 years for this promise to be fulfilled (Matthew 1:22-23).
This long waiting period encourages us to trust God’s timing. When life feels messy and God’s promises seem distant, we can hold onto His faithfulness. Isaiah 9:6 declares, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
In the humble, messy manger—a feeding trough for animals—Jesus was born. It was far from a scene of grandeur, yet it held the greatest gift humanity has ever received. The Savior of the world entered into our mess to bring us salvation and hope. Philippians 2:7 tells us that Jesus “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
This Christmas, let’s remember that Jesus’ birth is a reminder of God’s mighty hope. Because He lives in us, we can face life’s messiness with confidence, knowing that He is Immanuel—God with us. And as we rest in His hope, we are called to share it with our broken and dark world.
Consider this: This week I want you to take away an easy-to-remember acronym: H.O.P.E. H – Hold onto God’s promises: Like Mary, trust that God’s plans are greater than your understanding, especially in uncertain times. Pray for His perspective in your situation. O – Obey with kindness: Follow Joseph’s example by choosing compassion and obedience, even when circumstances seem unfair or unclear. Let your actions reflect God’s love. P – Pour blessings on others: Like Elizabeth, be a source of encouragement and support for others, even amidst your struggles. Small acts of kindness can reveal God’s Spirit in you. E – Embrace Immanuel: Remember that Jesus, “God with us,” brings hope and salvation into every messy situation. |
