How many times can you hear the same lie
Before you start to believe it?
The enemy keeps whisperin’ to me
I swear these days, it’s all that I’m hearin’
I used to know who I was
Now I look in the mirror and I’m not so sure
Lord, I don’t wanna listen to the lies anymore
The truth is I am my Father’s child
I make Him proud and I make Him smile
I was made in the image of a perfect King
The truth is I am truly loved
By a God who’s good when I’m not good enough
I don’t belong to the lies, I belong to You
And that’s the truth
One of my favorite songs these past weeks beautifully captures the struggle between our true identity and the ‘lie-dentity’ we often fall for. It resonates deeply because the world constantly feeds us lies about who we are. But if we ground ourselves in the Word of God, we find the truth about our real identity.
In Genesis 1:27, we read, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” From the very beginning, our identity is rooted in God’s design and purpose. Yet, without regular reminders from Scripture, we risk losing sight of this truth and falling into the trap of a lie-dentity—one that tells us we’re not good enough, that our mistakes define us, or that we have no real purpose.
The enemy is relentless in his lies. John 8:44 reminds us that “…there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” His goal is to distort our view of ourselves, making us doubt God’s goodness and our worth. But God, in His faithfulness, gives us the truth to counter every lie.
Consider Moses, who doubted his ability to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, saying, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11). Yet God saw him not as a stuttering shepherd but as a deliverer. Or take Gideon, who thought of himself as the weakest in his family, yet God called him a “mighty warrior” (Judges 6:12). God does not see us through the lens of our insecurities but through the truth of His purpose for us.
The Apostle Paul, too, underwent a profound identity shift. Once a persecutor of Christians, his encounter with Christ transformed him into a devoted apostle. He writes, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). What a powerful reminder that our identity is not anchored in our past but in who we are in Christ today.
We are called to reject the lie-dentity and embrace our true identity as children of God. Romans 8:16-17 affirms, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…” What an honor to belong to a God who is unchanging in His love and unrelenting in His purpose for us.
Consider This: Renew Your Mind: Regularly spend time in God’s Word to combat lies with truth (Romans 12:2). Declare Truth Over Yourself: Speak biblical affirmations over your life. Remind yourself, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Surround Yourself with Truth-Tellers: Connect with those who remind you of your true identity in Christ, not those who echo the world’s lies. Will you let God reveal and reaffirm your true identity this week? The choice between identity and lie-dentity is ours to make. Choose truth, and live in the freedom that comes with knowing who you are in Christ. |
