Last week, I meditated on the Gospel of Luke, there is a remarkable account of Jesus being “amazed” by the faith of a centurion. In Luke 7:1-10, we witness an extraordinary encounter between Jesus and a centurion, a narrative brimming with invaluable lessons on the essence of faith.
Imagine the scene unfolding before your eyes: a Roman centurion, a man of considerable authority and respect in the eyes of society, approaches Jesus with a heart burdened for his ailing servant. Despite his status, he doesn’t rely on his position or power but instead humbly pleads with Jesus for help. Touched by the centurion’s sincerity, Jesus agrees to accompany him to his home to heal the servant.
However, before Jesus can even take a step towards the centurion’s dwelling, the centurion, in an act of remarkable humility, expresses his unworthiness to have Jesus enter his home. Instead, he delivers a statement that reverberates with profound faith: “But say the word, and let my servant be healed.”
Imagine the impact of those words on Jesus. Here stands a Gentile, someone outside the Jewish faith, yet his faith surpasses anything Jesus has encountered even among the people of Israel. Jesus is astonished, marveling at the depth of faith exhibited by this unexpected believer. He declares to those around Him, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”
Indeed, the faith of the centurion stands as a radiant example for believers throughout time. It serves as a beacon, guiding us on the path of unwavering trust and reverence for the power and authority of Jesus. In a world where status and worldly power often overshadow humility and faith, the centurion’s example reminds us that true faith knows no boundaries and can spring forth from the most unexpected places. Let us, like the centurion, approach Jesus with humble hearts, confident in His power to heal and transform lives with just a word.
What sets this centurion apart? It is the fusion of faith, humility, and action. He recognizes Jesus’ authority, acknowledging his own unworthiness in the presence of Jesus. Yet, his faith is not passive; it is alive and vibrant, evidenced by his proactive steps to seek Jesus’ intervention for his servant.
As we delve into this biblical account, let us reflect: When was the last time our faith stirred the heart of Jesus? Have we approached God with unshakeable trust, surrendering to His sovereign power? Do we embody the humility and reverence exemplified by the centurion?
In our faith journey, let us emulate the centurion’s remarkable faith. Let us cultivate a faith that transcends boundaries, astonishes the Savior, and moves mountains. May our prayers be steeped in faith, our actions fuelled by trust, and our hearts surrendered to the miraculous grace of our Lord.
Let us remember the words of Jesus: “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:20). With unwavering faith, let us amaze Jesus and partake in the wondrous works of His kingdom.
